Leading Companies Unite Globally to Combat Climate Change
Posted on: September 23rd, 2009 by Lynnette AdamsonClimate change has become a key topic on everyone’s agenda as the UN climate talks in Copenhagen draw near. Recently more than 500 companies globally have signed a call to action, petitioning for more aggressive measures to combat climate change.
The major move comes in the wake of prime minister Gordon Brown’s announcement that he would be in attendance at the UN’s climate talks in December. The prime minister will attend, he said, to make sure that a deal aimed at preventing what could be dangerous temperature increases was reached.
The move has been dubbed the Copenhagen Communique and will be revealed at the UN’s climate summit in New York City later on today. The ‘Communique’ is aimed at upping pressure on world leaders to take a more aggressive stance against climate change and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Companies that have signed the Communique include British Airways, Virgin, BP, Shell, as well as energy utility giants EDF and EON. Companies that have signed on have warned that if Copenhagen does not produce a viable solution, the current global climate could worsen.
The communique will be presented to Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary General for the UN, along with 100 other global leaders who will be in attendance at today’s summit. The hope is that by presenting it at such a well-attended public forum, the consortium will gain momentum and a deal will be struck.
