London Traffic Lights Get LED Make-Over
Posted on: August 20th, 2009 by Justin BecksThe Mayor of London announced yesterday that 300 intersections in the city will be replace with LED lights in an effort to make London a little bit ‘greener’. The installation will convert 3,500 traffic lights to eco friendly LED lighting which will cut down on London’s energy consumption.
According to Mayor Boris Johnson Transport for London (TFL) will head the installation utilising over 10,000 LED lights to complete the project. The project will cost an estimated £2.4m, but is expected to decrease London’s carbon footprint by 600 tonnes a year. The cut in energy consumption will also save the city £200,000 in energy bills a year.
“I’ve seen the future and it comprises these tip-top, energy-busting traffic lights,” said Johnson. “Installing these eco-bulbs will cut the climate change emissions coming from London’s galaxy of traffic lights by more than half, as well as save money from energy bills.”
TFL has yet to name a supplier for the LED lights but is currently looking for LED light manufactures for the project. Johnson added that he hopes to see LED lights installed elsewhere in government infrastructure , as they can greatly reduce energy consumption. Additionally, according to Alan Bristow, TFL’s director of traffic operations, LED lights will also last ten times as long as their counterparts saving additional equipment costs.
