Mayor Boris Johnson Reveals London Heat Map
Posted on: October 14th, 2009 by Justin BecksBoris Johnson, mayor of London, announced today his detailed plans in order to localise energy generation to meet the British capital city’s needs. Currently, the majority of energy supplies for London come from power facilities located no where near the city itself. The gap in location and destination can cost up to two-thirds of the generated electricity to be lost in transport. Mayor Johnson has proposed localising energy production in order to curb energy costs.
Under the newly devised plans, 19 of London’s boroughs will be given support from London Development Agency and London Council in order to take steps to create local energy sources and schemes which will more efficiently use London’s energy resources.
The first wave of boroughs to receive the aid will be: Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Hackney, Bexley, Kensington, Lambeth, Redbridge, Kingston, Chelsea, Sutton, Wandsworth, Croydon, Haringey, Westminster, Lewisham, Camden, Islington, Barking, Southwark, and Dagenham.
The mayor also revealed a newly mapped out guide to London’s heat sources available for public viewing online. The map will help companies, organisations, developers, and landlords to ascertain appropriate areas which could be opportunities to localise energy in London.
Johnson has said he aims to supply at least 25 per cent of London with heat and electricity generated by a local source by 2025.
