McAfee says Energy Firms Are Not Prepared for Cyber Attacks

Posted on: February 24th, 2011 by Samantha Donovan

It now seems that a lot of energy firms are worried or are at least expecting to be hit by some kind of cyber attack in the future. However, the problem is, this future may not be so far away. On top of that, experts are saying that these energy firms are in no way prepared to deal with these kinds of attacks.

McAfee, one of the leading virus protection companies in the world, says that smart grids could be a real soft spot for energy companies in the next few years. These companies are going to have to do something in order to “cover up” these soft spots or some real problems could arise.

This protection company went on to say that, since more than 56 percent of executives are planning on connecting consumers to these grids via the internet, there is room for a lot of problems. The former United States director of central intelligence, Jim Woolsey, said that about 90 percent of people that are working for the smart grid are not concerned about security at all. This is a big problem that has to be addressed.

Overall, this is a problem for countries all over the world that are trying to get consumers hooked up to the “smart grid.” In order for this to work, companies have to get serious about protection. Although it is a pretty new type of technology, it is only a matter of time before cyber hackers figure out how to hack into it.

Some experts say that the big problem here is how fast companies are moving. Everyone is trying to quickly change a universal system. However, in their haste, they are forgetting or just simply choosing to overlook security.
