Microgeneration Technology Helps Little to Reduce Carbon Emissions
Posted on: January 26th, 2010 by Jason DrewReports are now claiming that households that are using microgeneration technology may be doing very little to reduce their carbon emissions output. The author of the the report, Doug King, said that items such as miniature wind turbines and things of this nature are not as helpful as some would think.
Doug King goes on to call these little miniature wind turbines nothing more than “eco bling.” The only purpose that these little turbines, or things like them, help is to make the household appear to be doing its part for the environment.
He went on to say that people would be better off investing the money that they spent on a little miniature wind turbine into something more useful like insulation or a better thermostat. This is what households should do if they are serious about cutting their carbon emissions, and over time their energy bills.
Professor King explained that if people build a building that is just as energy hungry as every other building, and they put a few wind turbines and solar panels on the outside to “address” a small percent of the building’s energy consumption, then they have really achieved nothing.
Places like the Energy Saving Trust recommend that households install insulation in lofts, tanks, and pipes. They also recommend taking simple draft proofing measures. These are great and cost effective ways to save on energy bills. However, they also recommended comparing and switching energy suppliers. All of these steps can help families all across the UK save tons on their energy bills and do their part to protect the environment.
