More nuclear power plants needed

Posted on: June 14th, 2008 by Justin Becks

The prime minister of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown has said that the world needs a thousand additional nuclear power plants in order to avoid an economic meltdown resulting from the high oil prices.

The prime minister argues that a new generation of nuclear power plants to combine with the four hundred nuclear reactors already in existence around the world as well as a seven hundred per cent rise in renewable energy capacity would assist in reducing the addiction the whole world has on oil and it would also offer United Kingdom secure energy supplies.

The prime minister was giving a speech in a Downing Street conference. Gordon Brown also gave a hint that even Scotland would have no choice but to allow for the development of more nuclear energy reactors. This is likely to cause conflict with Scottish National Party government which in 2007 ruled out the development of new nuclear energy plants since it considered them risky and not at all necessary.

On the issue of resistance to the development of more nuclear power plants, the prime minister warned the nuclear protesters that their actions if fruitful would lead to a world with insecurity, instability, increased poverty as a result of the energy crisis. He therefore appealed for them to see sense in the need for development of more nuclear reactors. The prime minister was however not willing to be specific on the number of nuclear power plants that he thought ought to be built in Scotland.
