Nationwide Competition to Find Most Eco Friendly Building

Posted on: July 2nd, 2009 by Jason Drew

Community groups from all over the UK have been invited to take part in a nationwide competition. The main aim of this competition is to find the most environmentally friendly public building. This new competition comes about following the great success of the Green Streets competition, which helped see eight roads across the UK compete for which one could save the most energy.

This government-backed competition is going to benefit from £2 million worth of funding from British Gas. Money will be awarded to the community groups that are able to cut back the most on their energy usage. The funding is going to go to a list of 14 community groups, with deadlines for applications set for the end of August.

Phil Bentley, the managing director of British Gas, announced the launch of this scheme. During this, Phil went on to say that he hopes that all community buildings, such as schools and pubs, can benefit from this and save some money. He also added that the green streets contest ended up saving some money and generating energy, so there is no reason why this one cannot as well.

These new competitions that have been popping up around the UK are a great way for the UK to stay on track of its carbon emissions goals. Many companies have already noted that the carbon emissions goals that the UK has cannot be reached unless communities, businesses, and the government all do their part to help the environment. These competitions could be the best way to get communities involved.
