NI Minister Supports Renewable Energy Report
Posted on: January 28th, 2008 by adminThe Irish Electrical Grid Study was made public earlier this week and Irish Energy Minister Eamon Ryan responded positively to the findings.
Today, Northern Irish Energy Minister Nigel Dodds has come out in agreement with Ryan that creating renewable power, such as wind turbines and wave power units, could offer a great deal of promise for the whole island.
Dodds commented: “This extensive and highly regarded research will be of international importance and provides evidence for maximising the use of renewable energy in Northern Ireland.”
He added that Northern Ireland’s location on the periphery of Europe offered a unique set of challenges. He went on to say that Northern Ireland had plenty of access to renewable resources and may be able to offer a significant contribution to the UK’s climate change goals by generating more electricity from renewable sources.
He concluded that this effort would “reduce the harmful effects of greenhouse gases and help Northern Ireland’s contribution to both UK and EU targets.”
Mr Dodds stated that the most likely renewable energy source that could be developed in Northern Ireland would be wind turbines. He also added that he would be teaming up with Mr. Ryan to develop new plans and guidelines in the coming months.
