Nissan to Launch £200 million Electric Car project

Posted on: July 20th, 2009 by Lynnette Adamson

Nissan announced today a £200 million project that will create new jobs for the motor industry which was hit hard by this year’s recession.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson were on hand at the Japanese car manufacturer’s Sunderland plant in North-east England today, as they announced their new project in front of over 4,000 employees. The company will be investing in the manufacturing  of electric car batteries for low carbon emission vehicles.

The new plant is expected to bring welcome jobs to the Sunderland area, as well as aid in the ongoing battle to produce “green alternatives” for the motor industry.  Nissan announced today plans to extend the investment to a plant in Portugal in a bid to further its new zero emission mobility program throughout Europe.

Lord Mandelson said: “The North East has distinguished itself as the first specialised region for ultra-low carbon vehicles. This is good news not just for the North East, but for the whole of the UK, helping to attract foreign investment and securing UK’s place as a global leader in hi-tech manufacturing and automotive industries.

In an effort to jump start production and research on zero carbon emissions vehicles, the government plans to established a “Low Carbon Economic Area” in the North East, which will include a training centre as well as research and development facilities.
