North Sea Sees Launch of Worlds Largest Offshore Wind Farm

Posted on: September 21st, 2009 by Justin Becks

The largest offshore wind farm in the world was inaugurated in the North Sea late last week. The Danish Crown Prince Frederik was there to press the button to start the Horns Rev 2 project. This project will see 91 turbines be place in the North Sea. This should be enough turbines to make enough green power to provide electricity for 200,000 households.

An industry audience was brought together in a civic center to watch the event via a video link. Unfortunately for the first little bit, the turbines all failed to turn at all. About half a minute later, a good breeze came in and the first blade slowly started to rotate around. As the first blade turned there were many cheers, some of relief, as they enjoyed watching the turbines in action.

The Horns Rev 2 project is just 16.2 nautical miles off the coast of Jutland, Denmark. This is now the world’s largest offshore wind farm. However, this wind farm will soon be eclipsed by the Greater Gabbard field that is set to come up soon in Britain. This wind farm did get some extra buzz due to the fact that it was put together by a Danish oil company, Dong.

The chairman of Dong, Fritz Schur, said that the firm would triple its production of clean energy by 2020. Many critics of wind power have already said that this kind of power is very unreliable because of the intermittent nature of wind. Of course, these critics were unable to silence or stop this wind farm from going up. It seems as if they will be unable to stop the wind farm in Britain from going up as well.
