The NPower’s Green Energy Fund has now helped to build a brand new log fired boiler. This new boiler has been placed in Shropshire at Carding Mill Valley. This log fired boiler alone is expected to help cut down the cost of fuel bills by £5,000 a year. This system, that will provide Chalet Pavilion with both heating and hot water, will help to reduce this property’s carbon footprint by about 10 tons a year.
To keep this system up and running, almost eighteen tons of logs will need to be cut down annually. These logs will be taken from National Trust Woodland in Wenlock Edge as a way to help the ongoing woodland management scheme for the UK.
This new log fired boiler has been funded by several different partners. This includes Npower’s Green Energy Fund, Shropshire Development Fund, National Trust West Midlands Sustainability Fund, as well as the South Shropshire District Council and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. All of these partners worked together to fund the £43,000 project.
Thanks to this new log fired boiler, Carding Mill will no longer have to rely on oil to provide heat to the property. This allows the whole property to be self-sufficient as far as heating goes, and it allows Carding Mill to no longer be exposed to the ever increasing price of oil. However, this is just the first step for Carding Mill. There will be other long-term projects for sustainable energy at Carding Mill. This includes a hydroelectric power system that will use rainwater harvesting.
