Ofgem Hands the Smart Meter Launch Over to the Government

It now seems that Ofgem has handed over its task of implementing 50 million smart meters in homes over to the government. The Department of Energy and Climate Change will now be in charge of this big roll out. The energy regulator will develop the regulatory framework for the scheme.

In a recent open letter, energy minister Charles Hendry and Lord Mogg, who is the chairman of the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority, said that the government has decided that, in view of the scale of this large program, the Department of Energy and Climate Change should assume direct responsibility for managing the implementation phases of this program. This will be the easiest way to make sure that the roll out goes as planned.

Under this new scheme, gas and electricity smart meters will be installed in every home by 2020. This will provide consumers with real-time information on their energy use. Overall, it will help them manage their home energy usage and save them money.

The letter went on to say that a code for the implementation will promote consumer confidence about the installation process. Consumers are going to be provided with helpful information in an accessible format on how to benefit from these smart meters.

Overall, the roll out of these new smart meters seems to be a pretty good idea. The idea behind them is that people will be able to learn how to adjust their energy consumption by reading reports from these smart meters. The more information that people have about energy consumption, the better they will be able to manage it.
