Paris Very Popular Bike Rental System Sparks Electric Car Plan

Posted on: August 3rd, 2010 by Emma Young

Apparently the very popular bike rental system in Paris has just recently sparked a new electric car plan. Thus, Paris plans to launch the world’s largest electric car access scheme in September of next year. The city is hoping that this new plan will emulate the popularity of its easy rental system for bikes, which is known as Velib.

However, this time it will be called Autolib, which stands for auto liberte. The new scheme will allow Parisians to rent an electric car whenever they need to - much in the same way that they can rent bikes whenever they need to. The main goal here is to help cut down on car ownership, and thus, help cut down on pollution and traffic.

So far Paris has had a lot to celebrate about recently. A lot of their pro-green policies have been a big success. Ever since 2001, traffic in the city has already dropped by 25 percent because of better public transport and restrictions on automobiles.

Paris is hoping that other cities around the world will follow in their footsteps. Of course, green groups are also hoping that cities take on these same kinds of polices. These groups go on to say that Paris has the right idea and other cities need to get on board.

Annick Lepetit, who is Paris’ deputy mayor, said that Autolib may help people choose to get rid of their cars all together. Not only will they be saving themselves money because they will not have to keep up a car, but they will also be helping out the environment.
