Plans For Wind Farm in Cornwall Put On Hold
Posted on: August 12th, 2009 by Tessa ClarkeCouncillors are submitting a proposal for a wind farm to be built on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall to a strategic planning committee with the suggestion that the committee reject it. Community Windpower planned to build 20 turbine wind farm in Cornwall, but is now facing opposition to the wind farm estimated to cost £75 million.
The deferral of the proposition to the strategic planning committee comes in the wake of residential protests against the wind farm being built at Davidstow. Residents of the area fear that a windfarm would completely take over the area overpowering the neighborhoods already there.
The committee hearing will take place August 19 in which a decision will be reached as to whether or not Community Windpower can proceed with construction of the wind farm. In addition to the residents, an environmental group Friends of the Earth, has also stepped out to oppose the twenty 126m turbines being placed at the site. The group, which generally supports renewable energy endeavors claims that the proposed location is too visible and inappropriate for a wind farm.
Rob Fryer, a spokesman for Community Windpower, said that quick decisions need to be made regarding renewable energy aims in the UK.
Simultaneously Windelectric Management proposed a five turbine wind farm at Otterham, and likewise was deferred by councillors to the committee, also with a recommendation for rejection.
