Prescott Calls On Councillors to Meet Wind Farm Obligations

Posted on: October 21st, 2009 by Tessa Clarke

At the annual conference for the British Wind Energy Association, John Prescott, a former Deputy Prime Minister, said that local councils must be pressured to scout out appropriate sights for renewables such as wind energy. The former Deputy Prime Minister implored the committee for wind and marine renewables to apply pressure to local officials for wind farm space and installation.

The annual conference, which was held in Liverpool this year, saw the revelation that approvals for applications for new wind farms had dropped by 25 per cent this year. Mr Prescott announced that the problem lies with local councils which are failing to adhere to their responsibility of combating climate change in their communities. He also blamed individuals who had moved out to the countryside and built nice housing wanting to preserve the pristine view of their countryside homes, saying these individuals challenge the installation of wind farms in their areas.

Prescott challenged local council members to meet their obligation by approving wind farm construction which is now government policy. Prescott called out councillors saying that they were denying wind farm applications and waiting for the Government to come and overturn them, so that they do not have to look bad in the community. Prescott said that this process is a defamation of duty and costly for the taxpayers.
