Protests cloud new energy projects
Posted on: August 7th, 2008 by Emma YoungKingsnorth Power station project is under cloud. Hundreds of protestors have congregated at Hoo, Kent. They are here to oppose the construction of coal-powered facility. If this projects goes ahead, then it would be first coal-based power generation plant for UK in last 30 years.
Campaigners are using innovative methods to get their message across. Their main aim is to create environmental awareness and to make plant owners and government to rethink their plans. A local environment group Kingsnorth Climate Action Medway has prepared cartoons of Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Hilary Benn. KCAM has said that they are doing so to underscore their message to authorities.
KCAM has urged Prime Minister to not to be taken in by E.On. E.On is the owner of Kingsnorth power station. They said that coal is a contaminating source of power. They accused government of playing double game. Campaign in Kent is witness to several altercations between police and protestors.
Protestors have urged government to shun the use of outdated techniques such as coal burning. According to them, such practices have severe environmental repercussions and government needs to make sincere efforts to address these concerns. They have further advised government to look for alternative sources of energy especially the renewable resources.
Kent police had claimed to confiscate numerous weapons from the campaigners. These weapons included knives and throwing stars. However, protestors have blamed police for trying to tarnish campaign process. They have claimed to employ only peaceful methods.
