PRTM predicts 10% electric car adoption by 2020

According to PRTM, an international management consultancy firm, government-backed programmes and developments in green infrastructures will push 10 per cent electric car adoption by 2020.

The consultancy firm also anticipates 50 per cent price cut on lithium-ion based batteries, assuming such electric car adoption will happen. It said that the cutback can be attained through optimization of the battery’s design. PRTM predicts that as more OEMs produce electric cars for the market, design optimization will lessen batteries’ complexity and will force battery prices down.

PRTM stated as well that the adoption of electric cars can produce up to 300,000 US jobs by 2020. The consultancy company foresees a speedy ramp up of green vehicles 10 years from now, thus producing over a million jobs worldwide. It is said that in the US alone, 150,000 more green jobs can be generated if the roadmap placed by the Electrification Coalition, where Coda and Nissan are members, is realized.

The Electrification Coalition targets that 75 per cent of all miles travelled by 2040 will be made by green cars. By 2020, the coalition projects that 10 per cent of the total automobile sales will be electric cars.

Global e-mobility expert from PRTM, Oliver Hazimeh, said that electric miles could be cheaper than oil miles by 2020. He further emphasized that after a decade on the road, hybrid vehicles have already attained one percent penetration in the market.

Hazimeh believes that battery cars could be more successful provided obstacles are overcome. These hurdles include high initial costs and the need for public charging stations.
