Renewable Energy Centre says UK Needs to take Big Step Forward in Renewables
Posted on: July 21st, 2010 by Beth WilliamsAccording to a spokesperson for The Renewable Energy Centre, the UK needs to make a huge leap forward in terms of its renewable commitments. Although people all over the UK are doing their part to try and be more energy “friendly”, some experts are saying that it is just not enough.
Recent figures that were published by Eurostat, showed that the UK’s generation of renewable energy was among the lowest rates in all of Europe in 2008. Although the UK has been putting a lot more money into renewable energy, it is very unlikely that this number has changed too much. In fact, other European countries have been putting just as much, if not more, into their renewable energy sources, meaning that the UK could be falling behind.
The representative from The Renewable Energy Centre went on to urge the UK government to put more investment, or more money, into this sector. This extra money was needed in order to give the industry what it needs to get back on track. The government has to have faith in renewable energy or the plan will never work.
He said that investment is essential if the UK is truly going to contribute significantly to the renewable energy industry. Both the public sector and the private sector need funding. This is a very critical stage in order to get the industry firmly on its feet and producing energy in meaningful volumes.
If people look at Europe as a whole, it is making progress in terms of using more clean energy sources. This is good news, as it means that countries are doing more to watch their energy usage and making a switch to renewable energy. A total of 62 percent of the new electricity generation capacity installed in European Union countries in 2009 was for renewable energy.
