Rising electricity bills reduce spending on food
Posted on: July 1st, 2008 by Justin BecksA new research conducted has revealed that the rising prices of electricity are forcing Britons to reduce their spending on food. Also the study titled Costing the Earth by the Ernst & Young auditing firm issued a warning that the prices for electricity and gas might increase by an additional twenty per cent in order to finance the government programme of meeting the carbon emission goals set by the European Union by the year 2020 which will involve reducing the carbon dioxide emissions and increasing the capacity of energy generated from renewable sources by twenty per cent.
As a way of meeting the renewable energy targets which were outlined by the European Union, the Government has come up with a programme to put money in solar, wind, water and other sources of green energy. This is expected to require a massive one hundred billion sterling pounds and this would see homes in Britain having their electricity bills rising by two hundred and thirteen sterling pounds annually up to the year 2020.
Gordon Brown the British Prime Minister, has admitted that the reaching the European Union targets would cost a lot but it would pay off in the end. Most people in Britain however are in disagreement and the Ernst and Young study discovered that almost seventy per cent of those interviewed were not ready to fork out more money for their electricity bill in an effort to cut down on the carbon emissions. Also the same number of people were not ready to reduce the amount of energy they used.
