RWE invests £6m in Quiet Revolution

Posted on: September 3rd, 2008 by Jenson Brayshaw

RWE, a German energy company which owns npower, is investing £6m for a minority stake in Quiet Revolution, a wind turbine maker company of Britain.

Quiet Revolution is expert in small-size, vertical-axis turbines which can be conveniently set-up in buildings. Their frontline turbine, called QR5, is capable of producing 6kW power while measuring just above 3 metres in width and 5 metres in height.

According to RWE, a local source of renewable electrical energy is going to become increasingly important for individual buildings.  Small wind-powered turbines, fitted on roofs, can greatly help in achieving this goal. This is especially important where solar power is not a viable option due to lack of sufficient sunlight.

RWE wants to help in making turbines like QR5 commercially viable through mass production. Nearly 30 of these turbines are already in operation around Britain. 45 more have been ordered.

Quiet Revolution has expressed its delight on having RWE onboard. RWE’s investment will allow them to rapidly expand their production capacity so as to meet the demand. It will also help in development of new products and satisfying the need of global market.

Micro wind-powered turbines have not achieved any great success in Britain so far. Many turbines have failed to deliver the power promised by their manufacturers. The main reason of this has been that buildings tend to spoil the smooth wind flow. But Quiet Revolution claims to have solved this problem through its innovative design.

The 6kW QR5 is currently costing about £40,000. Quiet Revolution is working on manufacturing its different versions which will range between 2.5 to 40kW.
