School to install wind turbine

Posted on: May 7th, 2008 by Jason Drew

The Netherhall School in Maryport is planning to set up a wind turbine that will be fifty eight feet high. The wind turbine will be situated in the school grounds.

The wind turbine is going to be one of the biggest ever set up at any school in Cumbria. The turbine will generate electricity that will be used by the flood-lit artificial pitches and the community sports hall and this is expected to generate an enormous amount of savings. The excess electricity that may be generated will be supplied to the National Grid.

The wind turbine scheme is expected to have a big effect on the school and the community as well by proving that reducing carbon emissions is well within reach of everybody. The wind turbine will generate approximately six thousand and five hundred kilowatt hours annually and this will lead to savings of close to three tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Ian Skillen added that where the turbine would be situated was the most appropriate location since it had the highest potential as well as offering the least amount of visual distraction.

Natural England had chipped in with some advice and the wind turbine will consequently be situated at a place where it does not stand in the way of bats.

The leadership adviser of Netherhall School added that the savings generated from the wind turbine project would aid in subsidising and making use of the facilities which will use the electricity produced. Primary schools in the neighbouring areas as well as various sports clubs use the sports amenities at the Netherhall School.
