Scientists Speak Out Against Alarmist, Misleading Global Warming Claims
Posted on: October 30th, 2009 by Jason DrewSenior scientists are speaking out against those who make exaggerated or inaccurate claims. The scientists have said that those inaccurate claims are actually hindering the efforts to curb global warming. According to the scientists exaggerated scare tactics to get people on board with aggressive climate change measures are resulting in the actual facts about climate change and dangerous greenhouse gas emissions getting thrown by the way side.
A former chief scientist who once worked for the government said that lobbyists, researchers, journalists, and politicians who all manipulate climate change facts are eroding the public understanding of such things as climate science, as well as playing into the hands of sceptics.
Commonly exaggerated claims that the scientists mention include the decline in ice in the Arctic sea, extreme temperature rises, and severe, catastrophic weather events over the course of the coming century. The experts assured that global warming is a serious issue that demands immediate attention, and that harmful effects could happen if emissions are not curbed, however, scientists fear that the sensational is often played up and that everyday phenomenon that are serious are being ignored.
Vicky Pope, the head of climate change advice over at the Met Office, said that the situation does not need to be over emphasized as the normal, everyday issues arising are already catastrophic enough. She continued on saying that the worst offense is the hype over the melting Arctic sea ice, which she believes is taking attention away from real issues such as the downward spiral of overall global temperatures which on a big picture are contiuning to rise.
