Scotland sees Rewards from Investment in Offshore Wind Farms

Posted on: February 1st, 2011 by Beth Williams

Right now, the renewable energy sector is still trying to get on its feet. There are a number of companies out there supporting the renewable energy, including the government, but it is still a pretty young sector. However, reports have just recently shown that the offshore wind farm sector in Scotland has just been given a big boost thanks to £30 billion in investments.

Scotland’s first minister, Alex Salmond, said that the green energy sector is going to see investments of around £30 billion. This could turn the renewable energy sector in Scotland into a big part of its economy. The government is currently very committed to the renewable energy industry. Overall, Scotland could see some huge economic rewards due to this investment. This big investment is broken up over the next ten years.

These comments from the minister come just after energy supplier Gamesa announced its intention to build an offshore wind technology center in Glasgow. They also announced their plans to open a turbine manufacturing base in Dubdee.

The Scottish government has already said that almost 26,000 jobs could be created in the renewable energy sector over the next decade. Due to this investment, this forecast could actually become a reality.

Overall, this is great news, not only for the renewable energy industry, but it is good news for the Scotland workforce. In the current economic climate, people are struggling to get by. The more jobs that can be created for people, the better. If the industry just continues to expand, then more and more jobs can be produced.
