Scottish Government Gives the Go Ahead for Massive Tidal Stream Development Project
Posted on: March 18th, 2011 by Samantha DonovanIt now seems that the world’s largest tidal stream energy development project has just been given the go ahead by the Scottish government. These same reports show that the system is going to be built right off the west coast of Scotland.
The system, which is being made by ScottishPower Renewables, is going to cost some £40 million to harness the power of the Sound of Islay. However, in the end, people assume that it will be worth the trouble since it should supply power for some 5,000 homes. This is more than double the number of homes on Islay to begin with. This means there should be energy to spare.
Overall, this system is being called a 10MW facility. All of the power that it makes will come from new emerging tidal energy technology. In the end, it should be able to provide a big boost in the Scottish economy.
So why did the Scottish government approve it? Well first of all, the Scottish government, just like other governments around the world, feel that everyone has to do their part to try to go green. This is a step in the right direction for Scotland. Also the government said that it will help to cement Scotland’s position as being a global leader in marine energy.
The truth of the matter is, tidal energy is hard to deal with. In fact, there are just a few countries in the world that can even think about using tidal energy as a source of green energy. The few countries that can use it normally opt for more efficient types of renewable energy, like wind power. However, with new technology coming out everyday, tidal energy is becoming a more reliable source.
