Scottish Government Will Be Completely Renewable By 2020
Posted on: May 20th, 2011 by Jenson BrayshawAccording to the newly elected Scottish government, which is led by First Minister Alex Salmond, Scotland is going to be completely on renewable electricity by 2020. This means that Scotland is going to make its target of getting between 80% to 100% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2020.
Alex went on to say that Scotland is going to exceed its target of getting at least 31% of its electricity needs from renewables by 2011. This means that Scotland is moving “faster and further” in becoming the green energy powerhouse in Europe.
He went on to say that, because of this pace, the 2011 target has already been exceeded. Thus, the country can now commit to getting 100 percent of its electricity demand from renewable sources by 2020.
Of course, he did not stop there. He went on to say that the region is going to generate twice as much electricity as what it needs by 2020. This means that Scotland can use this extra electricity to sell to other countries that need more power. It could be a good source of income for all of Scotland.
Alex, during this announcement, also said that a new portal developed by the Scottish Government, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, and Scottish Enterprise is in the works. This will be able to show off the country’s offshore wind potential.
Overall, he finished up by saying that this can help unlock as much as £6 billion of investment to deliver the world’s only commercially-leased wave and tidal projects. Renewable energy means big things for Scotland.
