Scottish & Southern Energy Acquires USKMOUTH Power Station
Posted on: September 9th, 2009 by Samantha DonovanScottish and Southern Energy acquired USKMOUTH Power Station last month in a deal reportedly worth an estimated £27m. The power station was purchased from Welsh Power Group.
The facility is made up of three separate energy harnessing units each with an individual capacity of 121 MW. Originally the facility was built in the 1960s, however the Welsh Power Group overhauled the power station in 2000.
The company was forced to put the property on the market when the investors for the project dropped funding and asked the firm to sell. USKMOUTH Power Station was backed by Deutsche Bank.
The power station had been on the market for a little while before Scottish and Southern Energy purchased the facility which is located in Newport. Welsh Power Group also sold their Severn Power facility, a gas-fueled power plant.
Chief executive at Scottish and Souther Energy said that the company had plans to make USKMOUTH Power Station, which currently runs on coal, a part of larger plans to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2020. He continued to say that the large site had the potential for other projects to help reduce the facilities carbon emissions, making it a key player in the company’s electricity generation portfolio.
