Scottish & Southern To Construct Energy Centre in Glasgow
Posted on: October 14th, 2009 by Tessa ClarkeScotland is set to receive 300 new green jobs at the hand of Scottish and Southern Energy. The major energy utility is planning on building a Centre of Engineering Excellence for Renewable Energy (CEERE). Construction will take place in Glasgow and is estimated to cost around £20 million.
The centre is part of Scotland and Southern Energy’s commitment to spend a total of £3 billion on renewable energy sources through a new programme which they have been enacting. The programme encompasses desiging, producing, and monitoring offshore and onshore wind assets all over Europe.
The centre is being constructed in conjunction with Scotland’s University of Strathclyde and is expected to bring 300 new jobs to the area. Chief executive of Scottish and Southern Energy, Ian Marchan, said that after the company had considered several options around the UK, Glasgow was chosen as the top site for its ideal location. The energy company will work with both the University of Strathclyde and the Scottish government.
The University of Strathclyde is known for its engineering and energy research departments, and has been pioneering research in many fields within the industry. CEERE will be completed in three years time, and until then, Scottish and Southern Energy is expected to set up a temporary centre on the university’s campus.
