SembCorp’s Renewable Energy Plant Wins Top Industry Award

Posted on: January 28th, 2008 by admin

SembCorp’s new power station with green credentials has won a major regional award for environmental achievement.  The SembCorp Biomass Power Station has landed the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) Environment Award.  It converts sustainable wood into renewable energy, powering 30,000 homes.
The Biomass Power Station cost £64 million to build and began operating in September of last year.  Rather than using fossil fuels, the power plant creates energy through the use of 300,000 tonnes of wood each year.  Much of the wood previously went to waste.
The station was the first large scale biomass plant of its type in the UK.  It was an idea seized upon by one of the executives from the Wilton-based utilities and services business and was the subject of much news throughout its construction.
It is a particular honor for the company to win an award from NEPIC as they represent more than 300 companies in the chemical, power, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries throughout the North east.
Paul Gavens, executive vice president and managing director of SembCorp Utilities UK, stated: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious award. The new power station is a tremendous first for SembCorp, the UK and this region as a whole. It is the culmination of a great deal of high quality work by a large number of people including our own employees and those of our contractor partners.”
