Siemens gets business from Poland

Posted on: April 28th, 2008 by Emma Young

Siemens has landed a contract from RWE Innogy to provide wind turbines for a project in Poland. The number of wind turbines to be supplied is thirty three, each with a potential of generating 2.3 megawatts. RWE Innogy is a subsidiary of RWE, a German utility, and is the renewable energy arm of RWE.

The thirty three wind turbines are to be set up at Tychowo in Western Pomerania and at Suwalki in Masuria. Eighteen wind turbines are to be set up at the Suwalki wind farm while the rest will be installed at the Tychowo wind farm. The thirty three wind turbines are expected to be operating at full capacity by the autumn of 2009. They will all cost one hundred million euros.

The deal involves not only providing the wind turbines which have a total capacity of seventy six megawatts but also involves installing them as well as commissioning them. Siemens has also entered into a five-year service contract with Innogy. The project is being implemented by RWE Innogy in partnership with Polish Energy Partners S.A, a Polish firm.

In Europe, Poland is one of the wind energy markets with the highest potential. The Polish Wind Energy Association projects that by the year 2020 wind farms in Poland could be generating more than thirteen thousand megawatts of electricity. Currently less than three hundred megawatts of the electricity produced in Poland comes from wind sources.

The head of wind power at Siemens, Andreas Nauen, expressed confidence that the wind power market in Poland would expand greatly in a matter of time.
