Sit-In Over Lost Jobs At Vestas UK Plant

Posted on: July 21st, 2009 by Tessa Clarke

More controversy is being stirred up on the small Isle of Wight today. Workers for the Vesta Blades wind energy plant were turned away at the entrance by police. The workers were denied entrance to the plant as a result of a sit-in being staged by 25 employees of the wind turbine facility.

The employees have established themselves inside the onsite offices and are claiming they will remain there until ‘someone listens’ to what they believe is an injustice.  The employees responsible for the sit-in had previously called for government action to provide security for “green” jobs.

One un-named worker was quoted saying: “What we would like to see is the government actually taking it over and possibly nationalising it.”

Vestas announced recently that it would be closing its UK based plant at the end of the month. The closure of the plant will result in the loss of almost 600 hundred jobs. The plant opened on the Isle of Wight in 2000, and will close July 2009.  Vestas is just one of the many energy companies hit by the recession this year.

Vesta Blades is the UK subsidiary of Vestas, the largest wind energy manufacturer in the world.  So far Vestas has declined to make any comments on the closure of Vesta Blades or the sit-in currently underway.
