Skoda to Develop Electric Vehicle With VW Technology

Posted on: October 19th, 2009 by Jason Drew

Following Volkswagen’s debut and presentation of their E-up car, Skoda has announced that they will develop their own electric vehicle over the next few years building on Volkswagen’s concept ideas. Since VW has already been able to develop and produce the technology, Skoda should have no problem getting their EV up and running on the market.

The Czech manufacturer will be making a technology sharing agreement with VW in order to retain parts for the vehicle, and should the swap be a success, Skoda will wait two years and then release its own take on the VW EV.

Volkswagen displayed their E-up model concept at an exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany and the commercial release for the vehicle is expected by the end of the following year. The 18kW batteries inside of the vehicle have a range of up to 80 miles and can be fully charged in under five hours.

A spokesman at Autocar said that if VW or Audi can develop technology for their vehicles, it will open doors for Skoda to produce its own car similar to theirs using the same technology. He added that VW will first have to produce the vehicle before Skoda can make their own.
