STA Travel Offers £10 Plane Tickets to Australia

Posted on: August 7th, 2009 by Jenson Brayshaw

STA travel, in a bid to promote travel to Australia in a recession ridden economy offered flights to Australia for £10 on Wednesday. The offer came as an attempt to fill empty seats on planes heading to the island anyways. All taxes and services charges were included in the bargain price, which carries a price tag not offered by a company since WWII when travel was being encourage to Australia after the war.

Tickets went on sale Wednesday at all STA travel agents in the UK and were part of a joint venture with the Australian Tourist Board, also looking to boost tourism to the country. 150 tickets were offered and were only available to young adults under the age of 30 who already had access to a holiday work visa. The criteria were aimed to encourage young adults taking a gap year to head to Australia for a work holiday.

Several people had camped outside the STA travel offices since as early as Sunday to ensure purchase of one of the 150 tickets. The tickets went on sale at 8AM and were promptly sold out by 8:32 leaving many youngsters hung out to dry.

STA stated that there has been a growth in long term holidays taken by young students similar to what students do when taking a gap year.

“If people have been made redundant in the current market, maybe they have never taken the opportunity to do that gap year travel. I think that is what is happening,” said John Constable, managing director for STA Travel.
