Street in the dark for two months
Posted on: June 28th, 2008 by Emma YoungA road in Elstree has been in the dark for over eight weeks following a fault in the street lights. As a result Sullivan Way residents have keeping to their houses unable to go out at night because of the darkness. This is the second place to suffer from faulty street lighting. A pathway and a street in Borehamwoods Meadow Park has also been without any light for over twelve weeks now.
The local authority which takes care of the street lights in the borough, Hertfordshire County Council, revealed that it had raised the issue with EDF energy. EDF energy is charged with the responsibility of repairing the particular street light.
A resident of the area who resides on Sullivan Way together with his mother, Robert Martin, revealed that since the street lights disappeared his mother had not been able to walk to the British Legion like she used to and now he had to drive her there himself. This was inconveniencing her because on those occasions when he had to work late she had to remain stuck in the house.
Robert Martin argued that though it may be the responsibility of EDF to repair the street lights the local authority which pays should demand that it be fixed immediately.
An EDF spokesperson revealed that the fault had been repaired and the current problem was a new one which they were planning to repair. The company apologised profusely for the problem.
A spokesperson for the local authority admitted that they didnt have the authority to do any repairs but that they inspect the lights every fortnight looking for ones that are not working.
