Street lighting fault stays for six months

Posted on: July 11th, 2008 by David Humphries

Street lights on an island have been on non-stop for over six months as the residents waiting for the council to send someone to fix them.
The street lights which are used for lighting the Craighouse area have been on for twenty four hours a day since December last year until this month.

The secretary of the Jura Community Council, Donald Darroch, disclosed that they had informed Argyll and Bute Council but nothing had been done about it. Jura Community Council’s secretary heaped the blame on the fact that the council does not have an electrician in its employ who is based in the area. He added that whenever problems to do with street lighting cropped up, the repair work was usually done by electricians from the mainland. He suggested that the island should get its own electrician who would be locally based to avoid a repeat of such kind of a problem.

Robin Currie the councillor representing Jura on Argyll and Bute Council, argued that it did not bode well for the council to allow wastage of energy when energy prices were climbing every day. He added that such situations called for immediate remedies.

The head of operational services at the council, Andy Law, disclosed that the Argyll and Bute Council paid a fixed rate to Scottish and Southern Energy which meant that the cost remained the same no matter how long the lights remained on. Andy Law however agreed it was an unnecessary wastage which should not be encouraged at all.
