Sway and Areva Will Tackle New Offshore Wind Farm Technologies
Posted on: August 11th, 2009 by Tessa ClarkeSway, an offshore wind company based out of Norway, and Areva, an energy company based in Paris, are in talks to work jointly in the floating offshore wind industry to develop new technology. Sway told the press that the two companies would work together to invent new technologies that would ”make it possible to exploit offshore winds in deep water for energy production”.
Areva is a French energy company that has previously worked in nuclear and are currently the turbine provider for the Alpha-Ventus project right off of Germany’s coastline. Areva has dived head on into the renewable wind energy market, even receiving a memorandum of understanding for supplying 80 wind turbines to Global Tech 1 wind farms. The M5000 turbines were developed in a joint venture by Sway and Avera. The Global Tech 1 wind farms are also located in Germany.
Sway’s CEO Eystein Borgen said, “Our aim is to demonstrate that deep water wind power is commercially attractive within the next four years. The use of Areva-Multibrid’s technology is essential for our project. The combination makes it possible to produce energy at a commercially attractive price.”
Sway was given approval for an offshore wind farm in Norway just 7Kms off of Karmoy. The company is currently shopping for investors for the project. Sway spokespeople have said that once funding is secured the project can be completed in 18 months to 2 years time. The project will be a combination of Sway’s floating tower technology and Areva’s 5MW turbine.
