Tesco Recycles Old Meat For Energy

Posted on: August 10th, 2009 by Emma Young

Tesco, a supermarket based out of the UK, has found a way to use raw meat to generate energy. The supermarket burns 5,000 tons of meat unable to be consumed by customers as an alternative for fuel.

PDM Group, a company based out of Cheshire, is responsible for the conversion of the meat into fuel for the large chain. Tesco then sells the energy from the inedible meat to the National Grid to be used to power residences in the UK. Tesco stated that they recycle enough expired meat to provide electricity to 600 houses a year.

Other supermarkets have shown an interest in the unique recycling method, but animal rights groups are not as keen on the concept.

“It’s a sad indictment of modern life that not only hundreds of millions of animals are killed each year in the UK, but so much meat is left over from greed and indifference,” said Justin Kerswell, the campaign manager for Viva (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals UK).

But Tesco maintains that turning the meat into energy is a better alternative than giving it to a landfill as waste.
