The Dangers of the Electric Car
Posted on: May 2nd, 2008 by Emma YoungIn a world that is trying is hardest to save itself from self destruction, the creation of the electric car seemed like the perfect answer to the elimination of green house gases. But, despite the positive effect on the environment, the cars may pose a risk far worse than anyone anticipated.
In the creation of the electric car, there was little concern taken for the quiet nature of the engine. The cars were created to be lighter and more efficient than their fuel burning counterparts. This was effectively created, but in the process the quiet nature of the care seems to be posing a danger to children and the elderly.
Unlike the fuel burning cars, the electric cars are nearly devoid of noise. This creates a safety hazard, especially in surrounding conditions that may offer increased noise levels. In a study used to gauge the audibility of electric cars, the participants needed the cars to be nearly 75% closer than their fuel burning counterparts in order to hear the oncoming cars.
Researchers are concerned that this safety hazard could increase the risk of car / pedestrian accidents. It has been noted that the highest levels of safety concern were noted when the electric cars were moving at very slow speeds, like those practiced in a parking area. As the cars picked up speed, the tires generated more than enough noise to alter someone to the oncoming traffic.
