Thousands More Protestors to Descend on Isle of Wight

Posted on: July 30th, 2009 by Emma Young

The Isle of Wight continues to hold the world’s attention as thousands of environmental protesters are scheduled to arrive in a show of solidarity for the 25 workers staging a sit-in at Vestas’ wind turbine plant.

Police at the Isle of Wight are preparing themselves for the arrival of over 15,000 protesters who are in route to the Isle after the canceling of the Big Green Gathering festival in Somerset.

Upon learning of the cancellation of the festival “green” activist encouraged ticket holders to head to the protest at the Isle of Wight instead.  Activists from groups such as Campaign Against Climate Change, Climate Rush and Plane Stupid will be joining a group called Workers Climate Action who have been at the location for almost a month already.

“We don’t want to overburden the people already there, but the message we’re getting back is the more the merrier,” said Steve Milligan, of Climate Camp, an environmental group heading for the Isle of Wight today. “The idea is we’ll be self-sufficient. There are various bits of grass where we can put up some tents.”

The majority of the protesters are hoping to arrive in time for a court hearing tomorrow, in which Vestas will seek to regain control of the energy plant.
