Tidal Energy company connects to national grid

Posted on: May 27th, 2008 by Emma Young

OpenHydro, a firm in Ireland has turned out to be the first firm generating electricity from sea tides to supply electricity to the United Kingdom national grid. OpenHydro has not only made history in the United Kingdom but also all over the world.
The tidal electricity generating firm has a two hundred and fifty kilowatt turbine which has been set up at the European Marine Energy Centre in Scotland. The connection to the national grid is experimental for the time being. The turbine has worked as planned and what follows will be further analysis.
The European Marine Energy Centre in Scotland EMEC is the only independent organisation in the world that is funded from public coffers that concentrates on developing technologies for generating electricity from sea tides and waves. OpenHydro on the other hand is a company based in Ireland that focuses on developing technologies for generating electricity from green sources. Its main business currently is designing and manufacturing turbines that are used to produce electricity from tides. The tests that are being conducted at the European Marine Energy Centre in Scotland are being done with the financial backing of the Scottish Executive and Sustainable Energy Ireland.
The working mechanism of the turbine by OpenHydro is simple and involves the conversion of the tidal energy into electricity. Once the tests are complete and plans finalised for deploying the turbines commercially, the installation of the turbines will be done on the seabed where they will not hinder the movement of ships and other sea vessels.
Since 2005, OpenHydro has managed to get funds totalling fifty million euros for its turbine projects. OpenHydro has twenty six people on its payroll.
