Tidal energy set for expansion

Posted on: June 16th, 2008 by Emma Young

If and when the Conservative Party takes over the government in the future, the United Kingdom should expect accelerated development of wave and tidal energy generation plants. This is the promise David Cameron has for Britons.

The Conservative Party boss is also expected to initiate debate in the House of Commons seeking an explanation on why the government had under exploited the tidal and wave energy when the United Kingdom was abundantly blessed with it.

The promise by the Tory boss is likely to force all the main political parties to take wave and tidal energy more seriously than has been the case in the past. David Cameron’s promise comes soon after the pioneer tidal energy turbine in the United Kingdom was connected to the national grid. The tidal energy turbine which is a pioneer across the world as well has been set up in Strangford Lough in Ireland. The tidal energy scheme will soon begin producing electricity which is estimated to be the equivalent of the consumption of one thousand one hundred and forty households.

The tidal energy scheme is spearheaded by a small West Country company. The tidal energy turbine measures one hundred and twenty two feet in length and weights one thousand tonnes. At first glance it looks like a huge windmill which has been turned upside down.

In his address the Tory boss expressed confidence that the United Kingdom coastline which is more than one thousand miles in length coupled with possessing some of the highest tidal variances on the planet had the capacity to offer the country with more than twenty per cent of the nation’s electricity needs.
