Two Clans Unite To Battle Wind Farm
Posted on: June 23rd, 2009 by Jason DrewFor many centuries, two clans, who are sworn enemies, have raided each others lands and pillaged towns. Now, more than 350 years later, the Morrison Clan and Macaulauy Clan have united to face a common foe. This foe is a planned wind farm, which is set to be placed on a historic battlefield where their forefathers had fallen.
This new petition against the wind farm has been started by Morrisons and Macaulays across the world. Support has been gathered from as far away as America, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. According to Murdo Morrison (age 70) of the Clan Morrison, there is a legend that has been tracked back to Norseman Olaf the Black that states the last great battle between the two clans was fought on the site in 1654.
Although there are no historical records that show just how many died during this great battle, many believe that there are people who are buried on moorland at Druim nan Carnan, which is north of Barvas. The big stones that use to mark their graves are, of course, no longer visible; they have either collapsed or have been removed.
The proposal, which has been set up by the community owned Galson Estate Trust, will place three turbines in this area. Morrison said that its not about the wind turbines at all. He says its about the desecration of a burial site. Morrison was born in Lewis, but now lives in Lanarkshire and is a member of the Hebridean Environment and Landscape Protection Society.
However, others claim that this may or may not even be the actual burial site. Local history claims that there are four sites in the area that could possibly have been the area of the last great clan battle. The Galson Turst company says that this area has been chosen because it’s close to the grid line.
