UK Citizens Encouraged to Grow Their Own Vegetables

Posted on: April 22nd, 2010 by Beth Williams

The UK has been coming up with tons of ways to cut down their carbon emissions. Their newest idea stands to hurt local farmers. The government says that people should grow their own vegetables in a garden. This can cut back on the carbon emissions that are involved in transporting food around the world. They also point out that it can be cheaper for the consumer.

A new hosing developer, Taylor Wimpey, has encouraged homeowners to make the best of their available space in order to grow their own food. The company has joined up with gardening expert Alex Denman to offer more advice to these home owners.

Alex Denman said that homegrown vegetables are much easier to produce than what many people may think. Even with the minimum amount of equipment and space, people can grow all sorts of delicious foods right from their own backyard.

Denman also pointed out that all ganders should avoid throwing away any kind of surplus food that they grow. She suggested that most vegetables will actually keep longer in the freezer, or if that person feels like experimenting, they should try to make some jam.

As some may have already guessed, farmers are not too keen on this new idea. One farmer said that people have been growing their own vegetables for many, many years. This is not the problem. The problem is that now the government is encouraging it, and it could hurt farmers in the long run.

Other farmers, however, are not worried about it at all. They say that it may cause a few people to start growing their own greens, but in the long run, it’s just faster and easier for people to pick it up at the market, and that is what they are going to do.
