UK Department Of Climate Change Announces New Competition

Posted on: September 11th, 2009 by Emma Young

A new competition promoting hydrogen and fuel cell technology for renewable energy devices has been launched in the UK. The competition, organized and funded by the UK’s Department of Climate Change, will invite companies developing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies to compete for funding of up to GBP 7.2 million.

The competition is being launched as a sort of stimulus for fuel cell technology aiming to jump start developing technologies in the hydrogen fuel cell industry. The Technology Strategy Board, a state-run operation, which funds, develops, and operates over GBP 127 million worth of low carbon emitting, clean energy projects throughout the UK will be contributing towards funding for the competition as well as several other unnamed donators. The Technology Strategy Board will also be responsible for managing the competition.

David Kidney, the minister of Energy and Climate Change stated that the UK already posses the right mixture of professionals, innovation, and ambition for hydrogen and fuel cell technology to be brought into the market on a global scale, and that the competition would be a means to provide capital to help these businesses advance the technology in the UK. He also said that developing hydrogen fuel cell technology further would help keep the UK on the cutting edge of the green energy market.

Similar competitions to this have already been implement in the UK for other forms of technologies related to various sectors of the renewable energy industry. The competitions are designed to provide funding to research teams which display the capacity and knowledge to develop new technologies in these fields advancing the process of global green energy.
