UK Energy Consumers May Want to Switch From Fixed Energy Tariffs

Posted on: December 30th, 2009 by Justin Becks

New reports are suggesting that consumers on fixed energy tariffs have been advised to shop around to see if they can get a better deal. These reports went on to show that people who signed a contract in 2008, when wholesale energy prices were high, might be better paying the penalty charged for ending the deal early than to continue paying the high rate every month.

It is suggested that one of the big six energy firms put its prices up by record levels in the summer of 2008. Apparently prices had risen by 35 percent for gas and nine percent for electricity. The founder of Theenergyshop.com, Joe Malinowski, said that the one place where prices have fallen is for discounted online tariffs. It seems likely that competition for new customers will remain very intense. Thus, it is very likely that people who are willing to shop for a better deal will be able to find one.

Households could already be set to receive cheaper bills in 2010 as the government has just recently announced reforms to the energy industry. This includes the energy bill, which was announced in the Queen’s speech that will allow the energy watchdog, Ofgem, to have more influence over energy suppliers. This is likely good news for energy customers and bad news for energy suppliers who have been enjoying great power.

However, most energy customers were very happy to hear of this new bill. Due to the economy and the on going recession, many people are looking for any way possible to save some money. It now appears that people will be able to save some money on their energy bills.
