The government has just recently announced £10 million worth of public funding for a number of companies that are handling offshore wind energy projects. This is all part of the UK government’s plan to create more renewable energy.

This now represents the first round of grants for the next generation of renewable technology that has been handed out since the UK budget was announced. As many remember, the UK budget announced that there would be many cuts made in order to tackle the UK’s growing mountain of debt. However, it does appear that offshore wind farms are not one of the things that will be cut.

Chris Huhne, who is the secretary of state, went on to confirm that the money will be given to seven different UK firms. All of this is in a big bid to boost the amount of power that is generated by offshore wind farms. Although there are other forms of renewable energy, the UK government seems to be banking a lot of money into the offshore wind industry.

Among the companies that were the biggest winners of this new development was JDR Systems. They are working on manufacturing sub sea high voltage cables for the next generation of offshore turbines. Of course, South Boats Special Projects will also benefit. They provide support vessels for the offshore renewable energy sector.

Mr Huhne, when announcing the news, said that offshore wind will be very significant in the energy mix. It will help the UK move towards a low carbon economy. This is a great way for the UK to be able to have a sustainable energy supply that people can rely on.
