UK Government Gives Go Ahead for Four Eco Towns
Posted on: July 16th, 2009 by Lynnette AdamsonThe UK government has now given the green light for four eco towns to be built in order to help tackle Britain;s housing shortage, while still trying to stay on track with helping the environment. This will be done by allowing these four eco towns to showcase energy efficient homes and green transport.
The idea of being able to showcase environmentally friendly living in the UK is something that the government is very excited about. The new settlements, which will be built by the time 2016 comes around, will include 10,000 new homes that will be built with the latest in energy efficiency measures. This includes streets that will have charging pints for electric cars and even numerous cycle routes and easy access to public transport.
Each of these four towns will be allocated a share of £60 million to support the construction of green infrastructure. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is launching the initiative, said that these eco towns will help to, not only relieve the growing shortage of homes in the UK, but it will help minimize the effects that the new towns will have on the climate. People who live in these homes will enjoy lower energy bills, as their homes are all built with energy efficiency in mind.
Although it seems like a good idea, many campaigners have been fighting the introduction of these eco towns ever since the prime minister announced the plan. The campaigners want the government to scale back the plan to just one or two towns, and use the rest of the money to go ahead and refurbish existing homes. However, the government says that this would do little to help with the housing problem, which is one of the main reasons why they are doing the project in the first place.
