UK Government Gives the Go Ahead on 8 New Nuclear Power Stations
Posted on: October 19th, 2010 by Lynnette AdamsonReports are now showing that 8 potential sites in England and Wales for new nuclear power stations have just been cleared by the UK government. They could be operational as soon as 2025. The government gave the green light on the new reactors in a move that will see the nation push forward with the most ambitious fleet of new nuclear power stations in all of Europe.
As already predicted by some sources, the coalition government has also confirmed that it is going to drop its support for controversial plans to build a huge tidal barrage across the Severn estuary. However, not everyone is happy with the government’s plans to drop this project.
The backing of this new generation of nuclear power marks a significant political compromise by the climate and energy secretary, Chris Huhne. Liberal Democrats had campaigned against these new nuclear stations. However, the Conservatives backed the stations.
Chris said that he is fed up with the stand-off between advocates of renewable energy and of nuclear energy. This argument has kept the UK from fully investing in either forms of energy. The UK needs to urgently invest in some new forms of power. The UK needs a diverse energy source to power all of the UK.
Right now, with how focused everyone is on how to make energy, no single answer is going to make everyone happy. Thus, someone has to step up and make a choice. People are going to have to agree to disagree on this topic so that the UK can move forward with some kind of energy program. If nothing is done, then the UK will find itself in an energy crisis.
