UK Home Owners Spending More Money on Going Green
Posted on: December 14th, 2009 by Samantha DonovanNew figures now show that home owners seem to be spending more money on green proofing their homes. Spending on green goods has actually increase by 5 percent, with each household spending an average of £251 on environmentally friendly products. This is great news for the UK, which has set some pretty high carbon emissions goals for itself.
Many homes around the UK are finally starting to slowly go green and now spend a good deal on green products every year. Some of the products that people are starting to buy include things like low energy light bulbs and energy efficient appliances. The Co-operative bank’s annual Ethical Consumerism Report shows that expenditures on green products and services have topped £6.4 billion in 2008.
Despite the worldwide recession, spending on green goods has actually increased by 5 percent on the previous year. This figure has steadily risen over the past few years according to the same report. However, the figure still only accounts for less than 1 percent of household expenditures.
Spending on such things as energy efficient boilers have gone up all across the country. Some experts say that this has happened, not only because people are more aware of the growing energy crisis, but people are finally starting to understand that they can save more with energy efficient products.
The chief operating officer at the Co-operative bank, Tim Franklin, said that the figure shows political leaders, who are attempting to secure a new deal on tackling climate change at UN talks, that many people in the UK are working hard to adopt a greener lifestyle.
