UK needs to declare war on energy
Posted on: September 10th, 2008 by Justin BecksThe British government needs to meet its renewable energy targets on a war footing. According to Dr Malcolm Kennedy who is a non-executive director at the New and Renewable Energy Centre, the country needs to focus on the renewable energy in order to make the change happen quickly.
Dr Kennedy said that currently, the initiatives of renewable energy generation are getting affected by three other considerations. These are energy security, affect on environment and the price. But in order to achieve the targets set by the UK government for itself and those of EU, it will have to focus in only one direction.
UK has decided to generate 10 percent of its electricity through renewable energy sources by 2010. Also, as per the agreement between all EU nations, it has to meet 15 percent of its all energy requirement through renewable energy generation by 2015.
Already, there are concerns over whether the National Grid can handle the feed from more renewable energy plants, especially from offshore wind farms. There is also opposition from a section of public to new power lines.
If UK has to achieve its renewable energy generation targets, it has to approach them with a single-mindedness of purpose. It will have to disregard all other considerations.
Crown Estate’s project manager, Danielle Lane, agrees to Dr Malcolm Kennedy views. She said that generation and distribution of renewable energy is a massive mission requiring singular mindset. It cannot be achieved without proper strategy and long term planning.
