UK PM Brown to propose stimulus package in winter
Posted on: August 17th, 2008 by Alf StephensNumerous homes in UK could get a lift from a windfall of approximately 150 pounds, later this year, as Prime Minister Gordon Brown attempts to rejuvenate his ailing leadership, say news reports.
As a significant packaged for autumn of this year, ministers are supposedly considering a one-off payment to homes and families as a form of child benefit. It is essentially a stimulus package to jump-start Britain’s troubled economy. The measure, which still remains undisclosed, will presumably alleviate the financial burdens of millions of families who are struggling to meet rising food and fuel bills in the wake of rising inflation. This will be the first among many of buttressing schemes that the Prime Minister will use as part of his autumn reinvigoration program.
A close ally of Gordon Brown and ex-paymaster general, Geoffrey Robinson, will also back up a petition signed by more than 50 Labour MPs, requesting that profits from oil and energy firms be geared toward low income homes, who will hard time keeping their homes warm this wintry season.
The petition is spearheaded by a centre-left pressure party, Compass and inked by the ex-education minister, Stephen Twigg, as well as the chairman of the parliamentary Labour party, Tony Loyd.
Several analysts are calling on Prime Minister Brown to take up the cause as a way of adopting a flashy policy during difficult economic conditions, brought on by the credit market crisis in the financial markets.
Neal Lawson, the chairman of Compass told reporters: The British government has to get serious, adding that, it is almost a litmus test for Gordon Brown to test his leadership in the UK and to reunite with a broken party.
